Cough (Infant)
More than just a tickle
A persistent cough in a baby — especially one that lingers after other symptoms clear — often has a structural component that gentle chiropractic can help with.
Understanding Cough (Infant)
What it is & why it shows up
Most infant coughs are viral and self-limiting. But if your baby has a cough that cycles back, sounds different from a typical cold, or seems tied to feeding (coughing right after, gagging, or pulling off), there may be a structural layer worth looking at.
The diaphragm and upper chest are innervated from the cervical and thoracic spine. When those areas hold tension from birth, the cough reflex can be more reactive than it needs to be, and the airways less efficient at clearing. Gentle spinal care sometimes shifts a chronic cough pattern faster than waiting it out.
We always coordinate with your pediatrician. A cough in a baby under 3 months especially deserves a medical evaluation first — coughs that have a medical cause (RSV, pertussis, reflux aspiration) need treating at that level before structural care adds value.
Important
When to seek medical care first
Call your pediatrician right away for any cough in a newborn under 6 weeks, a cough with fever, a high-pitched 'whoop' sound, or a cough that makes your baby turn red or blue. These need immediate medical evaluation.

Common questions
Frequently asked questions
Very possibly. Silent reflux — where stomach contents reach the airway but don't produce visible spit-up — is a common cause of persistent infant cough. We assess reflux at the same visit and often see the two connected.
